Origin of Glen One Whisky

Only few beverages in the world received a status of a symbol of the country as Scotch whisky did. For more than six centuries it has been standing on a par with the thistle and the lion, whose images are placed on the royal coat of arms.

Thistle once saved the Gallic warriors and became a national favorite. Thus, the flower was believed to reflect the Scots’s spirit and the traits they have been proud of for many centuries: strength, pride, and unpretentiousness.

The Scotch whisky first appeared in the valleys of the highlands, where the Gael clans traditionally settled. Over time, the Scotch whisky received a status of a special cult, gained glory and fame all over the world saving the lives of warriors, each of whom defended his Glen.
In fact, not only whisky gave the warriors the courage of a lion, but it was also the only effective medicine at that time. Thanks to the glorious fame of the healing effects, the Scotch whisky was referred to as «Aqua vitae» by the locals.

Whisky with its color of amber (the stone of the sun) took one of the most important places in the life of Gaels, being a symbol of life prosperity and helping them to survive in war campaigns.

History of Glen One Whisky

The Highlands of Scotland gave rise not only to a sense of identity of the locals, but also, to a great beverage – whisky, which has been considered synonymous with this part of Europe for several centuries.

Image
The first documented mention of whisky dates to the year 1494. These were the scrolls of the Scottish Treasury, the tax records of that time. Distillery equipment was primitive, as well as production methods. Whisky was often used for medical purposes and as a result it has been called «uisge beatha» - the water of life.

One century later distillation methods were considerably improved. Significant progress was made in the production of whisky in XVI-XVII centuries. This was greatly facilitated by the collapse of Christian monasteries. The monks who had previously been engaged in distilling whisky process, have been looking for a new shelter and usage of their skills. Thus, the secret art of distillation, carefully kept behind monastic walls, was no longer a secret, and the methods used by the monks spread quickly throughout the country.

As soon as whisky became firmly established in the life of the Scots, it attracted the attention of the legislature and entailed the introduction of high taxes, first on malt, and then on distilled alcohol. This was followed by the inevitable transition of distilleries "underground".

It took 150 years for a law to appear that allowed distilleries to legally produce the legendary Scotch whisky and turned the beverage itself and its production to what we know today. Since those times until now Scotch whisky has been only gaining its strength.

The accumulated knowledge and history passed down from generation to generation are reflected in Glen One whisky from the picturesque hills of the Highlands.

Production procces

The purest water from natural sources, the grain ripened in the fields of the Highland, and the yeast are the three components of Glen One whisky.

Image
The malting process begins with soaking dry grains in cold water to revive and germinate, as soon as the grain sprouts - dry, burn and grind.

Barley malt becomes coarse flour, which is mixed with hot water in a large vessel – a shut-off vat. The resulting hot sweet liquid is wort, cooled and put to distillation.

The distillation process allows to concentrate ethanol and because of double distillation we get spirit with an alcohol content from 60% to 75%. It can be slightly diluted with water before pouring it into oak barrels. In deep silence, darkness and stillness, alcohol will interact with oak for at least three years to become a high-quality Glen One whisky, with its unique complex aroma and velvety rounded taste.
